1. Who we are
CookNotes is a recipe organizer app operated through getcooknotes.app by an individual developer. This Privacy Policy applies to the CookNotes app, the CookNotes website, and related services that link to this page. For purposes of applicable data protection law, the operator of CookNotes is responsible for the processing described in this Privacy Policy.
2. Information we collect and process
Account information. If you create an account, we process your email address and related account identifiers needed for sign-in, account management, and syncing.
Content you save. We process the recipes, notes, tags, ingredients, instructions, folders, pantry items, shopping list items, and other content you choose to store in CookNotes. If you add photos, screenshots, or other media, we process and store them so they can appear in the app and, if you use sync, across your devices.
Imported content. If you use recipe import or translation features, we may process the text, images, and URLs you submit to extract, organize, or translate recipe information.
Purchase information. If you make a purchase, we process purchase status, entitlements, and limited billing-related information made available by our payment and platform providers.
Feature settings. If you use Germany weekly offers, we process the postcode and retailer preferences you provide for that feature.
Device permissions. With your permission, CookNotes may access your photo library, camera, or notifications when needed to provide specific features.
3. What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not use your saved recipe library for advertising.
- We do not intentionally enable cloud syncing for guest use unless you choose to sign in and use syncing features.
- We do not send your saved recipe photos or instruction images to AI services simply because they are attached to a recipe.
- We only send content to AI or translation providers when you choose a feature that requires that processing, such as recipe import or translation.
- If you use CookNotes without signing in, your content is generally stored locally on your device. If you later sign in and start using cloud sync on that device, existing local content may be uploaded to your account.
4. How we use personal information
- To create, maintain, and secure your account.
- To save, organize, sync, and display your recipes and related content across your devices.
- To power recipe import, translation, and related app features that you choose to use.
- To process purchases, restore purchases, manage entitlements or credits, and provide billing support.
- To send optional notifications related to app functionality.
- To provide weekly suggestions and local supermarket offer matching where available.
- To maintain security, prevent abuse, debug problems, and improve the reliability of the service.
5. Service providers and recipients
CookNotes works with service providers that help operate the app and website. These providers may process personal information only to the extent reasonably necessary to deliver their services to us.
The main categories of recipients are infrastructure, authentication, purchase management, AI or translation, and image search providers.
Supabase. We use Supabase for account authentication, cloud sync, database storage, and certain file storage functions.
RevenueCat and Apple. We use RevenueCat to manage in-app purchases, entitlements, and billing state on supported platforms. Apple may also process purchase information when you buy through the App Store.
Google Gemini and DeepL. When you use AI import or translation features, recipe text, images, and other content you submit may be processed through our server-side integrations with Gemini and DeepL.
Unsplash. If you use image search features, search requests and related attribution data may be processed through Unsplash-related services.
6. Additional privacy commitments
Your password. We do not store or access your plaintext password. Authentication credentials are processed through our authentication provider as part of sign-in and account security.
Your saved content. We do not routinely read, review, or monitor your recipes, photos, or other saved content. We process that content only when necessary to provide features you choose to use, maintain the service, investigate abuse or security issues, or comply with legal obligations.
7. Legal bases for processing
Where applicable, we process personal information on one or more of the following legal bases under data protection law:
Performance of a contract. When processing is necessary to provide the app and its core features, including account access, syncing, saved content, and purchases.
Consent. When you choose optional features that require permissions or additional processing, such as notifications, camera access, photo library access, AI import, or translation features.
Legitimate interests. When processing is reasonably necessary to secure, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the service, prevent abuse, and support core operations.
Legal obligations. When processing is necessary to comply with applicable law, lawful requests, or regulatory requirements.
8. Storage and retention
Your information may be stored locally on your device and, if you sign in, in our cloud infrastructure so it can sync across your devices.
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our terms, and protect the integrity of the service.
If you delete content or delete your account, related information may be removed from active systems, subject to reasonable backup, fraud-prevention, legal, and operational retention requirements.
9. Your choices and privacy rights

You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
10. International processing
Your information may be processed in countries other than your own, depending on where our service providers operate. Where required by applicable law, we rely on appropriate safeguards for cross-border processing.
